3º - Web Task Unit 6

Hello,

Deadline for this work is next Tuesday 27 January. You have to turn it in through Edmodo.

UNIT 6. THE PRIMARY SECTOR

Web task 1: European agricultural policy

Introduction

The European Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), one of the original pillars of the European Community, is a European common system of quotas and prices set up to increase productivity in the agricultural sector, to ensure a standard of living for the agricultural population, to secure availability of supplies and to provide European consumers with food at reasonable prices. This system led to the overproduction of ‘butter mountains’ and ‘wine and milk lakes’ of the 1980s, with farmers being paid to produce goods for which there was no market.

Task

Use the links below to answer these questions:

What caused European butter ‘mountains’ and milk and wine ‘lakes’? Explain the meaning of these expressions and the causes.

Do they exist at present? (this or any other case)

2º - Web Task 5

UMAYYAD ART
Introduction
Under the Umayyad caliphate (929–1031), Córdoba became the greatest intelectual centre in all Europe, and many libraries and schools were built.
The Umayyad Caliphs commissioned luxurious objects for their palaces. These were decorated with ornate marble capitals, decorated wall panels, and marble fountains. The palace-city at Madinat al-Zahra and the additions to the Great Mosque of Córdoba are especially magnificent.

Task
Make a virtual visit to the following monuments and answer these questions:

• What was Madinat al-Zahara? When and why was Madinat al-Zahara destroyed? What is its function today?

• When did construction work begin on the Christian cathedral inside the Aljama
mosque? Explain what you have learned about the Mosque of Córdoba.
